Two to Tango [Lemongrass & Ginger]

Lemongrass and Ginger is a universal favourite – there are few cafes who do not have one on their menu. But to be brutally honest, we’ve found some of them to be a little, well, insipid! This combination is designed to pack a punch – after all, what is the point of putting these two star ingredients together if you don’t let them shine? Two to Tango also has a rare claim. At ten, Kerry’s youngest daughter decided that she didn’t like tea. At all. Any. Even the ones she hadn’t tried. Just DECIDED it. (Right?!?!?) BUT – even SHE likes this one.

Lemongrass is rich in antioxidants, amino acids & trace elements & has antibacterial & antifungal qualities as well. This makes it a brilliant choice for frontline support when dealing with colds & flu. High in potassium, it’s understood to stimulate blood circulation, aiding metabolism & digestion & lowering blood pressure. It supports the cleansing of the liver & is a great source of Vitamins C & A, which keep hair & skin healthy & gorgeous. Ginger is referred to in Ayurveda as “the universal medicine”. Studies show it to be extremely useful in lowering blood pressure & inflammation, making it brilliant for menstrual pain & arthritis, and one component, gingerol, has been shown in lab tests to suppress tumour growth. Ginger is also known for alleviating nausea & relieving coughs & colds by calming the respiratory system. It improves our “agni” or “digestive fire” – increasing our gastric juice production which supports healthy digestion, aids nutrient absorption & helps with weight loss & irritable bowel syndrome. Exciting early research seems to indicate that ginger has a protective capacity for the brain’s neurotransmitters dopamine & serotonin. We will follow that with huge interest!

This tea benefits from a generous amount of time to brew. If you’re making a pot, (which is a great idea, as you can pop some in a thermos to see you through the day) add a generously rounded teaspoon per cup plus one for the pot. Pour boiling water over the tea, then tuck your pot up in Grandma’s crocheted tea cosy (or a tea towel if this vital tool is missing from your life) and let brew for at least 5 minutes. Longer is always better – it’s worth the wait. In cold weather, this is a tea that can be sipped all day long, and in warmer weather, a morning cup or one before meals will help your digestion. As an iced tea, you can mix it with lashings of fresh soda water and ice and garnish with lemon and a sprig of mint or lemon verbena!
